The Moon Village project presents a holistic approach to the planning of a lunar development, centering on the need for habitation systems, designed as adaptive space environments to enable versatile surface operations. Mankind has never had a permanent lunar presence, and so this new vision, that Wrner likes to call the Moon village, would represent a giant leap in. Laying claim to the Moon has been declared illegal through international space law and no state has made such claims, despite having a range of probes and artificial remains on the Moon. This collaboration aims to demonstrate the potential of an international private-public partnership to advance human space exploration through cross-disciplinary cooperation. Colonization of the Moon is a process, or concept employed by some proposals, for claiming robotic or human exploitation and settlement on the Moon. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in collaboration with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and the European Space Agency, are investigating concepts for the first permanent human settlement on the lunar surface. It is a vision to apply international cooperative principles to exploration beyond low Earth orbit. With interest growing in a return of humans to the moon, says Jonathan Spencer Jones, attention is turning to the possibility of establishing a long-term presence there and the form that such a settlement might take. In 2015, the director general of the European Space Agency (ESA), Jan Wörner, introduced the concept of the “Moon Village.” Inspired by the unparalleled level of cooperation achieved by the International Space Station, the Moon Village represents an extension of this paradigm of deep space activities.
